Vulgarity after the jump.
Fuck you Nick Denton. Your hubris bankrupted the media empire you built. And while you are fine with what I assume to be millions in personal bank accounts, nothing more than your overinflated sense of self worth and presumed righteousness has put hundreds of employees in a precarious position.
As it pertains to Jalopnik and Oppo, you drove the Miata directly into the ditch. No amount of Awesomeness Manifestos or editor swaps could overcome the cancer of corporate culture the cesspool of Gawker proper and Jezebel brought along. This site (and a select few others) were the Letto to your Norton/Pitt. You just wanted to destroy something beautiful.
Fuck you Nick Denton.

He wanted to destroy something beautiful? Dude, he BUILT the beautiful thing you love. He built it with his money (for which you have such disdain) and his ability to bring talent to the table — that talent includes the Jalopnik staff AND the Gawker and Jez staffs.
Also, the reason why notwithstanding, Gawker Media isn’t the first media company to go through a bankruptcy filing and sale. It won’t be the last. I’m a journalist and have been through one myself (my former employer, that is, not me personally). Guess what? That company still exists. The only thing that’s different is the logo on the letterhead and the paychecks.
I’m going to paraphrase (simplify and add lightness) what a LOT of other Oppos have already said today, and what Patrick George said himself in his post on the FP:
Calm the fuck down.
This isn’t digital Armageddon.
You're welcome.

I really don’t get the Gawker hate over here, it’s not the best of news media, but still

Outing people, shitty ‘journalism’ and all. They’ve gotten better, but publicly outing someone in the closet, and posting a sex tape that had shit to do with public importance, they are earning many sympathizers.

Simple: People hate and fear what they don’t understand.
Lots of Oppos have only half followed what’s been going on with the Gawker Media/Hulk Hogan/Peter Thiel fiasco, or haven’t followed it at all and have only seen the constant raging from fellow Oppos about how Gawker is ruining Jalopnik (never mind that Jalopnik wouldn’t even exist without Gawker. Facts are so pesky).
That, and it’s a lot easier to rage stroke than investigate further or realize that there are many, many more facets to this situation.
But, BIG BAD GUY DENTON IS A BIG BAD GUY GRRRRRRRR RAGE STROKE FUCK THIS SHIT EVIL ASSHOLE VILLAIN!!!!!

Why do you defend him so vigorously? The main culture is pretty toxic, even from a snarky millennial hipster viewpoint. I would know I’ve had one since 2005.
Gawker is generally bad journalism. It’s very hit or miss and their excuses flip if they hit(we’re journalists!) or miss (we’re independent bloggers!).
I’m a general hate reader/masochist so I still often read it, but generally I just shake my head at yet another story the overlooks some vital chunk of context or mistake.
When the culture allows authors to write for the sole purpose of aimless antagonizing, why should I stress about it? Nick Denton is a schmuck, like most media players.
I don’t wish any harm on the guy, but any time I read his work I’m in awe of the level of “pretentious ass” he has achieved.

Gawker is what it is ... it is called Gawker after all. Once in a while I hit the National Enquirer website - they’re not often right, but they were right about John Edwards. Gawker is relatively tame, and they’re also the platform that permits us to rant about ugly Maseratis and what’s the best Warner Brothers cartoon (hint: it’s Ali Baba Bunny).
I wished Denton and Gawker well on Twitter. That’s all I have.

Denton bought Jalopnik, he didn't build it.

I guess it has. That's some tasty crow. My bad. I always thought Jalopnik was older than gawker.
